Impact Fees on the Horizon – Advocacy Update

Impact Fee Piggie BankWashington is buzzing about Syria, and Missouri is debating HB253 (the income tax cut legislation) which will be voted on next week to see if the General Assembly will override the Governor’s veto, but closer to home, the building industry is always under pressure.

Many revenue strapped counties are looking for ways to fill in the gap. Greene and Christian counties have both proposed “use taxes” — and potentially other revenue taxes. Greene County Planning and Zoning and City Utilities are both asking for fee increases for building projects. Many other fees have the potential of cropping up.

All counties in Missouri will vote for the Presiding Commissioner position, a hugely important position to county government and the building industry. The Greene and Christian County Presiding Commissioners have each suggested they will not run for re-election, opening their seats.

It is important for the HBA and its members to continue its strong history of Advocacy and Political efforts. As local and state governments continue to work their way out of the financial weeds, we need to make sure they don’t do it on the back of the building industry. Remember the phrase “impact fees“?

You can help ensure the greedy eyes of government are thwarted as good news continues to be generated about the building industry by staying involved in the HBA, giving to your HBA CBBT (Coalition for Building Better Tomorrows), and showing up at events for our legislators. It is incredibly important for us to keep our presence elevated at this very critical time.
