Build My Future UPDATE

April 17 is the day. There are more than 2,500 high school students registered to participate in the third annual “Build My Future” construction career day. More than 2,500 students have the opportunity to explore what their future could look like in the construction industry!

The HBA of Greater Springfield is proud to be part of the Build My Future collaborative

It is through the efforts of many different groups (HBA of Greater Springfield, Workforce Board of the Ozark Region, Springfield Contractors Association, MoDOT, MSU, OTC, Builders’ Association, Springfield Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Job Center and private industry) that Build My Future was created.

We are especially grateful to MoDOT for bringing the idea of Build My Future to the Missouri Job Center and allowing all of us to partner together and run with the idea.

Workforce development has been a topic of discussion for years, but no one entity could tackle this big of an issue. Together we are making a difference.

Build My Future is a one day interactive Construction Career Day targeting high school students. The key to this event being successful is the interactive activities. Students get the opportunity to interact with individuals working in the construction industry while actually experiencing construction jobs.

Just a few of the activities that have been at Build My Future in the past include making marshmallow guns out of PEX tubing, building bridges with MSU students, operating construction equipment, learning about 3d architecture, building brick walls, roofing dog houses, building dog houses, and the list goes on and on. But the most important part of the day will be the conversations held. Common questions in the past have included:

  • What kind of training do I need to…
  • What can I expect my starting wage to be?
  • What is a normal day like?
  • Is there a chance to earn more?
